Our motto and motivation is to “collect experiences, not things”. Whilst on our journey, we’re aiming to spend our time and money on spectacular experiences, to be left with incredible learnings and memories, not tangible objects. This way, we’re sure to keep our lives light without additional luggage, but also be the change we want to see in the world.
Our first featured experience is a Greek cooking class at Katarina’s Couzina.
Baked octopus, creamy Moussaka, and sweet Baklava. These were just a few of the traditional Greek dishes we learned to make at our new friend, Katarina’s Greek cooking class during our recent visit to Poros.
Upon arrival, we were treated to chilled wine and Briami (Greek oven-roasted vegetables), whilst the head chef and teacher, Katarina, explained the rules of the kitchen and the amazing menu we were going to prepare. Once again, we waved the South African flag high, with the other students coming from Norway and France. For the one Frenchman, this was his third time visiting Katarina’s class, and we (very quickly) understood why.
After an hour of wine-induced prep work, and the base for the Moussaka on the stove, I began making the Baklava (a dish we have now made three times since the class) and Stevo beamed at the grill (South African braai blood coming through, of course). Though both lovers of the art of cuisine, our skills could always use some sharpening, so we loved standing at our separate stations watching the pro demonstrate proper cutting techniques with the locally-sourced produce, and correcting our cooking faux pas. Gordon and Nigella, watch out!
With all necessary dishes in the oven, we grabbed a jug of watermelon cocktail (probably the tastiest I’ve ever had) and headed to the beach, a mere 100m from the kitchen, to watch the sunset. When we got back to the restaurant, our 6-course meal was ready for us to devour, and what a feast it was.
Thank you again Katarina! We hope to make it back soon and do it all over again (just like the Frenchman).
